Define Time Management for Your Family

There is no easy way to define time management. It is different things for different people and different methods will work for different people. While there are no one size fits all solutions when it comes to proper time management there are many things that you can do that may help you find some of the time you are either losing along the way or completely sacrificing each week.

In the grand scheme of things most of use allow time to manage our lives rather than learning to define time management and the techniques that will better manage the time in our lives. If you are one of the many people like that in the world there are some things you can do that will help you learn to seek out and define time management techniques that will work for you and your family. The one thing you must do is make the effort to learn where you are facing the greatest time dilemmas then take the steps to correct those situations.

In my family, I have used my morning routine to define time management problems for my family and myself. Because of the problems we have getting out of the door on time morning after morning we are in the process of adopting new time management policies that should make the morning routine run more smoothly and effectively. We began by laying out all the children's clothes the night before. We didn't stop with clothes however, we also had all lunchboxes lined up in the kitchen waiting for the final touch in the morning, we also had all hats, gloves, coats, shoes, and scarves, etc. waiting by the door and all homework, books, notes, etc. tucked into backpacks (which we left sitting on the floor in the kitchen beneath the lunchboxes). You would be amazed at how much that helped with the morning routine and those were rather small changes that save so much time in the morning by taking a few minutes at night. Now that we've adopted these changes we are not allowing our problems to define time management for our family. We've taken control and it is an amazing way to begin the day by comparison.

This does not mean that these steps will help your family define time management problems. If you do find that mornings are a time management disaster in your family, then perhaps the things we've adopted would help your family start the day off better. However, some people find that the afternoon routine is much more chaotic for them and that this is the area where they define time management problems.

If the afternoon is the time when you define time management disasters for your family, perhaps it's time to become a schedule Nazi. Set aside a specified amount of time for homework. Nothing else is done during this time until homework is complete (sports, dance, etc will be missed also if homework isn't completed on time with rare exceptions), dinner preparation can generally be taken care of by one parent or the other while children are completing homework assignments, and the other parent can begin a load of laundry or take care of other tasks that need to be completed around the house. By taking control as a family you are learning to define time management for your needs rather than being ruled by a perceived lack of time.

We live in a world of empowerment. Until you learn to empower yourself to define time management in your life, time is most likely going to manage you.
